I don't really know, I can't find an absolute definition anywhere...to my mind a yacht is a boat with sails and/or a motor that is equipped for long journeys and includes everything you need to live aboard, where as I'd think of a sail boat as any sail driven boat designed to be taken out for short specific trips and purposes.
