Unpopular opinion: I don't give a shit about OP_RETURN one way or the other.

Monero is designed with a very clear objective: absolute #privacy
Anything that deviates from that or might open up vectors for analysis is discarded.
And OP_RETURN, (like in Bitcoin) which leaves data visible and in clear text on the Bitcoin blockchain, goes completely against the spirit of Monero.
Monero does not transmit garbage or data, only money.
