Request input on my initial definition of politics: ‘the means by which the authority to wage war, tax and imprison is manifest, regardless of the environment in which it is practiced.’

From my readings, I don’t believe this is a particularly novel definition, but I do believe I may have missed things in my readings about which I might be reminded.

I attribute ‘authority’ in this definition of politics in the same way a law of nature might be understood as an authority with regard to what actions can occur in the universe we understand.

First poly science class as an undergrad, the Prof defined politics as “Who gets what, when and how.”

It is a great definition because it applies equally to international relations, corporate relations, community relations, or family relationships.

The difference between international and family relationships is only one in scale and complexity (international) vs. complicated (family).

Pet peeve is when I hear some say they are “just playing politics.” Each of us play politics ever day whether it is siblings vying for the last Eggo waffle (should be called Ego Waffles 😂) or a politician looking to steer funding to his district.

Quote is attributed to Harold Lasswell in his 1936 book with the nearly same title. I didn’t recall that and had to look it up

When the laws of nature change and the world I understand no longer allows me to predict an outcome to be preferred, I wonder what new laws exist in the thinking of others?
