I was just reading about different forms of caffeine producing plants. TIL some scientists believe some plants started producing caffeine in their nectar as a way to enhance the cognitive ability of bees and other pollinators in order to encourage them returning to the plant. Nature is wild, if true.

I always assumed it was one of the so-called defense chemicals, but this makes more sense actually

Apparently, some plants do also use it as a defense against other invasive species
