I feel like I must be doing something wrong on here. I am not seeing a single post in my timeline in Amethyst except my own toot. When I click on that, I can see replies. And I can see replies on the bell screen. I am connected to 13 relays...
Does #nostr only show me things from people I follow?
If so, how am I supposed to find people I want to follow if I can't just see everything and surf for the interesting toots?

Do you have the mostr bridge in your relays if your using a nostr client?
You can change your feed from "All follows" to "Global" on the top navigation bar. Then you should see every note posted on every rellay you're connected to. That's a way to find new people to follow.
Another way to fill your feed in Amethyst is following tags. Again on the top navigation menu, usethe search tool to find a tag of something you are interested on. Common ones are #nostr, #plebchain, #coffeechain, #grownostr, #bitcoin... There's many more, just see what people are using in global and follow those you find interesting.
That should start populating your feed. Just remember, there's no algorithm here. Instead, you need to put the work and create a rich feed by picking in and filtering out stuff. Visit global regularly to keep building your feed, and unfollow, block accounts that you find uninteresting/annoying.

Thanks for the tips on finding the cool kids. I'm used to just finding a dope instance and then scrolling through that server's local timeline, so #Nostr is quite the change of pace. I really appreciate the help getting acquainted.

There are no toots here, this is not Mastodon, it is Nostr.
On Nostr you have to curate your feed. It takes a bit of time but is very rewarding after you build a good follow list and nurture some internet frenships.
Use hashtags, view a bunch of random profiles from those hashtags, scroll their posts, follow them if they are 🤙🏻, make internet frenz🫂. A key ingredient is spending more time engaging with others content then your own. Everyone loves getting some yum-yums on their notes and stuff.

Yeah, I got it fixed. I was looking only at followed people (so, no one) instead of the global timeline.
Seems like jashtags are going to be super important over here since people can't just find a cool instance and peruse. They find a cool hashtag and peruse instead, which is fine as long as people use hashtags.
Yes hashtags are the way to go. And if you dont see what youre looking for just start one. Also here we add ‘str’ to the end of things on hashtags. So like #book is #bookstr - #food is #foodstr it will help you find stuff
