What if we gave users the ability to indicate which country they are in (optionally) and from that we could fetch their time zone and see if it’s morning, afternoon, evening or night over there. Might make the timeline experience more interesting?

I'd use that actually, if it shows the time thing, plus might be interesting to also show "when does USER usually post" in some analytics page.
