Opinion | How Hong Kong Sevens showed need for change in city’s tourism strategy

==========

Over Easter, over half a million Hong Kong residents left the city, while only about 200,000 inbound visitors arrived, primarily from mainland China. Restaurants experienced a 30% drop in business compared to previous years. In contrast, the Rugby Sevens event brought optimism and increased spending from tourists. Wan Chai pubs were filled with people carousing, and media reports highlighted tourists visiting nightlife districts. Rugby fans were more visible and improved the city's mood. Hong Kong's tourism strategy needs to change to appeal to Western tourists and a more international demographic, as they possess higher spending power.
