Financially, emotionally and socially. Seeing your kids as a financial burden is short term thinking.

In some cultures perhaps. But I agree with Stella in this regard.

I think if you are in the west and your children are are your retirement plan. Regardless of how well you raised them. You are taking a big chance and not to mention the pressure of placing that expectation on them. I wouldn't want to do that.

I do things for my parents. But not because they expect it, but rather because it makes me feel good when I go to bed at the end of the day. I don't know how I'd feel about things if they placed those expectations on me.
