We try to limit candy to the absolute minimum but at every parade ever and during Halloween people literally throw candy at other people children. We settled on taxing it up front to remove the worst offenders, then one piece a day for a set number of days after which the leftovers are “donated”. I have never known kids to be so militantly opposed to taxes, but they oddly aren’t offended by donating the candy to a “good cause”.

Yeah, we have a hard time keeping them away from junk when they see other family members or go to parties, so we negotiate instead. I think it's the best thing to do.
