I’ve always wanted to learn how. For someone generally knowledgeable about music and tuning other instruments, is there a steep learning curve?
If you have a good ear, you can learn, but tuning a piano is not like tuning other instruments because of the high inharmonicity present in pianos. Only unisons are pure, all other intervals require beating to some extent. Tuning lever technique takes time to learn too. Check out “Pianos Inside Out” by Mario Igrec.

Thanks! This explains why pro tuners have an entire set of tuning forks. Though I imagine you could use a specially calibrated electronic tuner?
I only have 1 tuning fork but I never use it! 🤣
I tune aurally by listening to the beating of the intervals and making adjustments so they fit together in what is called a temperament.
I use an ETD (electronic tuning device) for setting my starting pitch A4 (usually at 440Hz), but some use it for the whole piano. You need a specific piano tuning one that recognizes inharmonicity; a guitar tuning app won’t work quite right.
Makes sense, thanks
