What I do know is that when the Church had an equally disproportionate level of power over the individual they did fucking horrific shit in the name of God.

i think that the church made it quite a bit harder since there was the hierarchy of cardinals and pope as well as the would be emperor... they were very often not so aligned in their goals and that made it a bit less prone to racing into a hitler/mussolini/castro/trudeau situation

so, it's probably true to an extent, because there was at least 2 poles before, now there is only one
