Not in his defence on this - but it’s more an attempt to mitigate bots than collect a new revenue stream. Adding a monetary control in the form of an annual $1 subscription will put pressure on the malicious users who use automation to create thousands of fake accounts and spam the network.

well, StackerNews is an amazing platform to speak freely but every action you take is chraged. you pay sats to post, to comment, to zap..., and yet is one of the best platforms to share content IMO 🤔

also there is a case to be made (and I'm not a fan of Musk) but for you to be free of external influence, you need to be self-sustainable. For example, if you rely a LOT on gov. subsidies or selling ads, then those are sort of your bosses

Don't know all the info on this but there was talk that this would possibly be introduced at some point to stop out Bot accounts.

If they are created by AI on mass, it would start to get very expensive to push out post from 100,000 Bot accounts.
