Hey Nostr, so I want to start my mining journey.

Yes I know this will be a lot of work

Yes I understand there will be many headaches

No I'm not trying to be rich.

Im interested in helping to secure the network.

Im looking into the used antminer S9 because of the power cable.

Is there anyone here that can give me some advice on buying asics, what other hardware will I need. Is there any software requirements?

Should I run my own verification node? And if so should I use a raspi 4 or a start 9?

I'm trying to do this on a budget so whatever you guys can do to help would be great!

Think about your electric cost. The reason older miners are pretty cheap right now is because of efficiency. Do the math and see what running that S9 24/7 will cost each month. Most likely at BTC’s current price you’ll be mining at a loss. If you can afford to pay for the electricity and want to participate in the network and just hodl the bitcoin then I tip my hat to you sir. Lots of people do that just because they want to and some believe that in the long run it will actually be profitable if you consider the value of the BTC in 10 years vs now. That’s just one thing to consider. I can vouch for start9. Solid software and the setup is relatively simple. Lots of capabilities if you’re willing to dig into a bit more of the technical side of things. Lastly I wouldnt expect too many headaches or it being difficult. ASIC miners are pretty simple to setup initially and then you pretty much just check in on them.

Securing the network is more important I'm my opinion. That's why i want to also look I to running a full node. I guess at the end of the day I want to be a full participant in the security and dissemination of the bitcoin network.

I think it'd be really neat to build an S9 into a retro'ed space heater...I've seen some of those around. Then maybe just maybe in High fee environments during the winter months it could be efficient. Either way it would be fun to play with it. I think my father in law and I are going to buy a S9 this weekend

I couldn’t agree more. Just didn’t want you to get an electric bill that’s 4x what it normally is and be surprised. I’m not sure how much juice an S9 pulls but I’m sure you can figure that out. Let me know if you get into it. I’d like to see the space heater setup if you go that route.

I bought the s9 it'll be here in a few weeks. I'm excited just to play around with it. I found a decent write up on how to convert an s9 into a relatively good space heater. I really want to look into that route because It could make the s9 profitable...don't know though. If we're able to output some hash and see a return even if it's a -return we might upgrade to an s19 we have the power capacity just not the sats
