If you still want to spend money on separate hardware, I'm a big fan of old Dell OptiPlex Towers. You can find them pretty cheap on eBay. ~85$ gets you 8 to 16 gigs of ram and an i5 or i7 processor. For that price you'll probably have to provide your own hard drive but shop Around and you would be surprised what you can find.
