So what exactly is social media for?
For some, it is a way to sell ads into an addicted audience. But we are trying to get away from that with the #Fediverse. So if it's not that, what is it for, exactly?
And for you personally: if you didn't have social media, what exactly would you miss in your life? Which needs do you have that would be unmet?

To see what’s happening in my community - a bit like the community bulletin board but with personalization.
To connect and share ideas with others - meet new people and learn new things.
I think we originally joined because our friends were on various platforms, but that quickly deteriorated into showcasing perfect lives, which morphed into influencer culture and a gaming of the algorithms, which meant if you wanted to see posts from just friends - you needed to sift through a bunch of other content first.
