Totally agree, repurposing the existing symbol is a terrible idea is only going to cause confusion.

I don't really care which symbol gets used for sats although the one proposed at satsymbol.com at least has *some* traction as it is. Can't say I care for ϟ, it's too reminiscent of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schutzstaffel
