It's been kinda difficult convincing friends to give NOSTR a legit go. Can't convince most and when I do they'll post once and that's the end of it.

I'm guessing if you're already happy with your current social media experience, why change it? Most don't really care about the the whole censorship resistance aspect- yet. They might complain about annoying ads, privacy, and algorithms, but it seems like everyone is willing to put up with that too.

Zaps are cool, but if they're not already into Bitcoin they don't really care about it either.

Some killer new innovative feature or unique client experience in the future might do it. Something they can't get elsewhere.

I might've "cried wolf" too many times too. I remember trying Ello, MeWe, than the Fediverse. After Google Plus went down me and my pals looked around for the next thing and I was the one suggesting one thing after the next. It was appreciated at first, but I bet that got annoying after a bit.

They were willing to put up with the Fediverse for a while too, but there'd be times where the server would disappear and their account with it. After a third time of setting up their account they burned out on the idea.

I think nostr has more of a chance at taking off in the long run than activitypub since you can build virtually anything using the combination of NIPs you need. All you need is a few apps built on it to go viral and you'll have tons of users interacting with the rest of the nostr-verse.

I agree with you! In general having an account on NOSTR is simpler too. Tried self hosting, but it was a bit much for me as someone who never really managed a web server before.

Mostly though, I'm just wondering when my own friend group will take a shine to it. I know something will come along that will convince them, just not sure what that'll be yet.

Tried self hosting a Fediverse server, I mean.
