An astronomer captured a rare, detailed photo of a sprite, a type of upward-shooting red lightning, during a thunderstorm in Slovakia. The sprite had a luminous, zig-zagging structure measuring over 31 miles across and lasted for just a few fractions of a second. Sprites, part of transient luminous events tied to lightning, are difficult to photograph but may be triggered by disturbances in atmospheric plasma.
