I’ve been reading reactions to AI saying that humans have always worried about technology taking jobs. But in the past, workers always found something else to do.
Here’s why it really might be different this time. Humans have a limitation — their intelligence.
Let’s assume, that the average person has an IQ of 100. Let’s say manual farm labor requires an IQ of 65. Most people have a higher IQ so they could find something else to do.
You can think of technology as automating its way up the IQ scale. Removing jobs that required an IQ of 65, 75, or 85. What’s different now is that we’re starting to automate jobs that require an IQ of 100 or even higher.
So I think those worried are almost right. There will be few jobs in the future. What will people do instead? Start businesses. Find a way to help people; be creative problem solvers. Bring a product or service to market. There are endless ways to make people’s lives better.
This is my advice to students. Don’t pay for an expensive and time-consuming education to get a job. You’re wasting your time and money. Learn how to build or create something. Start a business. You probably don’t even need employees. You now have AI.
