Ponyo was released in 2008, well into the digital animation age, Miyazaki made the decision for the entire movie to be hand drawn. According to the great 4-part documentary on his work, 10 years with Hayao Miyazaki, 5 seconds of animation created by his team of artists and then hand-checked and edited by Miyazaki himself, takes one week of work to create.
