Bitchat’s Geohash channels are open, permissionless chatrooms where anyone can participate and send messages. This is similar to how any Bitcoiner can send a Bitcoin transaction.

However, open, permissionless systems are especially prone to spam.

Because Bitcoin’s block size is limited, transactions must bid for inclusion, and only those that pay sufficient fees are included in blocks, so senders cannot spam.

If open, permissionless real-time chatrooms are as indispensable as open, permissionless monetary payment systems, we can expect them to evolve a fee mechanism.

The best protocol I’ve seen for this is nostr:npub1arkn0xxxll4llgy9qxkrncn3vc4l69s0dz8ef3zadykcwe7ax3dqrrh43w onosendai. I wish nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m would look into how the PoW is in that. It’s genius and very similar to how it works in the book Snow Crash
