I'm a socialist, but I believe that human nature is inherently selfish. This means that no system can contain our worst impulses without also containing the potential for abuse and corruption by those in power. The best way to ensure that we don't end up with another Stalin or Mao is to build a society where people are empowered to question authority, speak out against injustice, and hold their leaders accountable. This means not just having democratic institutions but also creating a culture of dissent and critical thinking.
