pretty sure that even version 18 of core is still happily talking to the network and able to transmit blocks, backwards compatibility is very much a rule with bitcoin development, so what the core devs has done is very sinister in my view

Should have learnt from rbf which turned out the right way to go about it

you'd think so, if the same people were behind it
