In Japan, tattoos (irezumi) have a cultural background of being associated with the yakuza, which may be one reason they tend to be viewed negatively. Another factor is that, unlike makeup, tattoos can’t be easily removed🤔

I have heard the yakuza connection (because hotsprongs restrict access to tattooed people)
In some cultures, tattoo is an old form of marking people (like in some parts of India old ladies have green tattoos on their arms). So I think like Shion-san mentioned there's a lot of dependence on culture 😅
