Chinese scientists have, for the first time, discovered micron-sized hematite (α-Fe2O3) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) crystals formed by large impact events in lunar samples brought back by the Chang'e-6 mission, revealing a previously unknown oxidation reaction mechanism on the moon and providing direct sample evidence supporting the origin of magnetic anomalies around the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin.
