while this does allow more flexibility, doesn't really help new users who no one follows imo. and new users who no one follows are the ones we need to have a smooth experience moving to nostr.

I don't mind having it be invite-only. They really need just one follow.

As we don't really have a spam problem yet, you're happy about every new user but that will change quickly and requiring new users to do a week of POW to beat the 3s ASIC of the spammers won't solve this.

I agree with your point about spammers using asics. though I do think this will only be a profitable attack once nostr has sizable user base, even then its not a low cost spam attack

still thing pow is worth trying, at least for now

distributed moderation will handle spam well because you can expand the moderation effort over many users

I agree with this. I plan to outsource moderation to users somehow. need to think through incentives though so it doesn't lend itself to abuse.

I would work with public block and mute lists just like the follows.
