If you take the long view with nanotechnology, there will be some point where diamond will go from "super expensive" ---> "structural material"... I.e. we build buildings, rockets, etc with it.

It's the ideal substance to use, and carbon isn't scarce. Gold on the other hand will always have a certain amount of scarcity.
