This life is beautiful, but short. Your time with family and friends is precious… treasure it. Do not take this day for granted…. The below is a eulogy I wrote for the first friend I ever had, Eric, who tragically died young at the age of 37.

Some bonds last a lifetime…

You don’t get to choose who your first friend is, but with parents like mine, I was lucky. My first friend was a loud, blusterous boy, with a sharp wit, and a knack for mischief. He was a bundle of energy. To Eric, life was a game to be played, and he won a lot. But even when he beat me, the pure joy on his face made me laugh along with him. He had one of those laughs you never forget… a deep chuckle that he suppressed in the back of his throat that somehow perfectly conveyed his supreme amusement at the world around him.

Some of my earliest memories are of us swimming, playing hide & go seek, building castles, playing hockey… all the things little boys do… we were a team, and I’ll always cherish the many memories I have of all our adventures together.

Eric moved away, and as we grew older we saw each other less and less, as is life… but funny enough, both of us would develop a wit so sharp we would cut ourselves on it just as much as we would cut others. Neither of us ever seemed to be able to keep our mouths shut, even for our own good.

Eric taught me how to speak my mind, even if my opinion wasn’t popular. Hard truths and brutal honesty aren’t usually well-received, especially in this politically correct world… but true friends tell them to you, and Eric was a true friend to me…

We got to catch up at the end of December, 2019 when I came home to visit my family… me traveling extensively had made our hangouts rare, but the instant I saw him, it was like the old days. The last time I saw my friend, his eyes were clear, he had purpose, and he was excited about his plan of helping others in pain and giving something back. I didn’t know that it would be goodbye forever…

I was lucky to have such a good friend. I will mourn his loss and miss his chuckle… This world is a poorer one without him.

Rest In Peace my friend 🙏🏼
