Benjamin Franklin was quoted as saying "When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic. Sell not liberty to purchase power."

I don't think he envisioned the politicians internally voting themselves money and doing whatever the hell they wanted with it, republic be damned. If torching liberty gives them power, then by god they'll do it! I'm pretty sure he'd be pretty frustrated and angry with our carelessness.
