If they released a new phone every 5 years instead of releasing 2 new iPhones each year they'd be able to catch up and provide the same quality as other manufacturers.

It's the business model that stops iPhone from catching up, they simply can't be as good as anything else otherwise the next iPhone wouldn't be an improvement on the last.
