S9 hashing on direct DC solar and AC PSU hybrid system

https://v.nostr.build/ZF3imFr3BxzP6Y7u.mp4

Here I have an S9 powdered both by the 12v DC output of a solar charge mppt controller and the output of an apw3++ plugged into an inverter. The output of the solar charge controller is wired directly to DC output lugs of the PSU. As the clouds roll by the output of the solar power decreases and the PSU delivers more power from the inverter. This same technique can be used by plugging the PSU into a grid powered outlet instead of the inverter. It's basically a way to subsidize the power consumption of a miner with solar power directly. It's pretty cool to watch.

After 3 months of poor solar mining conditions, hashrate is ripping again, off grid, at the yurt.

Late October was the last time a miner was plugged into the solar power system at the yurt. As the solar mining season comes to a close, the winter heating season begins and the miners are needed for heat in the house.

The system was expanded to its maximum production potential with the existing inverter, and charge controllers. This allows for full utilization of the equipment for Bitcoin mining which fast tracking the return on investment. Since installing the equipment, Bitcoin mining has already recoupped 25 percent of the total cost. (There is a 30 percent tax refund/credit whatever the fuck too)

It's a totally different story when denominating the expenses in Bitcoin (that's true of anything). The goal was to increase resilience and balance forms of capital. It's impossible to know when a extended power outage might occur and this solar power setup is enough to keep my essential loads running, plus I already had the miners to utilize the power in the meantime. Now, the system is completely installed, and I'm familiar with it's operations and repairs. After the power is out it's too late, and I'll wish I already had the system instead of Bitcoin anyway.

Suns up hash up GM

Very well said ... and what a cool setup 🤙

Living my dream life!

Same here. I want to build one of those Earthships, and mine Bitcoin with off-grid solar.

Earthships are amazing, the whole reason I'm doing what I'm doing is because of my apprenticeship with Earthship in New Mexico back in 2011.

I was wondering if other Bitcoiners are into Earthships! They are amazing indeed. I am taking their online course now since I can't leave the fiat mine yet. Planning to go volunteer for a few builds this summer and when Bitcoin hits a certain level, build one for myself.

Man, I haven't really paid attention to what they have going on over there in years. I'm sure the online course will help a ton. In the meantime, I would recommend finding some projects to use pounded tires. Learning the technique of pounding tires is something that takes lots of practice in my experience. I use pounded tires for as much as I can around the homestead so I can avoid having to relearn my technique when I finally start building dwellings. I'm also interested in the Paul Wheaton Wofati concept, because I have lots of access to timber.

Earthships are amazing. Have you seen https://www.geoship.is/ some beautiful designs.

Interesting that they use some secret bio ceramic material. Otherwise, it's just geodesic domes. One thing I love about earthships is the open source-ness, and the focus on using local materials along side simplistic building techniques.

Yeah, the two guys developed it themselves, so good for them. Neither of them were material scientist is the cool part. I do like the openness and community of the earthships better as well. I was just blown away at some of the designs these people were doing... and I love geodesic domes!

Both the domes and earthships are solving the same problem while accessing most different markets. This is a great example of how there are many ways to do a thing but no best way, only different ways with tradeoffs.

Thanks for sharing your progress. In the process of building a couple hundred watt solar panel system to run a bitaxe and charge LiFePo4 batteries to expand the capacity of my ecoflow for emergencies. Now I’m starting to think I should make a separate system just for miners

Why do you think the miners should be separate?

I’m thinking into the future. Maybe I go from just bitaxes to something with a bit more hash power.I’d like to know They can run overnight without running out of power. I don’t think I’ll ever hit a block but I think it would be cool to help the network while being 100 percent solar.

Charging Chevy Volt electric vehicle with off grid solar power, for even better value than Bitcoin mining.

Another sunny day and some warmer temperatures too, which means the roads were clear. The Chevy Volt is a plug in electric vehicle with a gas generator, in very cold weather or when the roads are bad the Subaru Outback is the vehicle of choice, but today the weather was good to take the Volt out for some errands.

Thanks to Bitcoin meetups, the Volt was acquired p2p for Bitcoin and today was the first day conditions were good to charge it back up with solar power. While the value of mining Bitcoin with solar is good, using solar power to charge a vehicle is even better!

Hour for hour, solar charging the volt is about 3x more valuable than solar mining Bitcoin when comparing the fuel savings to driving the Subaru Outback. In the summer, with warmer weather, this ratio will get even better (assuming the bitcoin price doesn't 3x by then) because the battery gets more efficient when it's warm. (I also have some very cool plans this summer related to Bitcoin mining and this vehicle too...)

Oh, and I'm also still mining Bitcoin with the solar power today too, because I can only charge Volt at 12amps on 120v, I've got 24amps to work with.
