Yeah, it's totally driving apartment rents up, too, and makes it hard for normal workers to find someplace to live. They can't pay astronomic rates, but the government just dishes out the money.

Indeed. I have a friend who lost everything during covid and he's in a program for people in extreme life situations. has been for the last two years. At the end of this year the Bezirk will not extend the program and he literally cannot find a place. ALL rentals are above the rent he's eligible to receive as a single household. Hence, he'll be homeless by March unless something changes dramatically.
This guy used to have a restaurant with 11 employees for 15 years.
Typical story.
A lot of economic misery has been hidden by local programs, but the local governments are bankrupt.
It's easier for local governments to get money from the Bund for some welfare, than for others, is the thing.
You're 100 right. But this man paid his dues and the dues of his staff for 15 years. He doesn't deserve to be abandoned by his own government. He can't even get a loan to start a new business (for which he is more than qualified) because the government put him into SCHUFA for the COVID relief he received in 2020 and couldn't pay back when they closed the economy.
So basically, they gave him money only to destroy him and they did the same to many others from the same industry.
Yes, I was listening to a radio show with a woman running a café. She's doing okay, now, but paying back the COVID loans was apparently a struggle.
