What animals do you plan to start hunting and what style? Treestand out east, in a blind, or western spot and stalk?
Discussion
deer eventually and thinking a treestand is the way to go
will be just targets for a while though so wanted something you can grow into a bit
Ok, how tall are you and what’s your budget range that you want to stay under to start(weird questions together but I swear they’re relevant)?
6ft on a good day and was hoping to stay under $500 or so if that’s doable
Assuming you’re a righty, buy this now on Amazon. Since you’re doing treestand/blind you’ll want a shorter axle to axle bow so this is 30 inches. This makes it so in a treestand you’re not hitting branches with a longer bow. Because you’re 6 foot-your draw is most likely between 28-30 inches so this bow does that. This bow literally comes with everything that you’ll need to start for $200. That’s a ridiculous deal. If you end up not liking it, it’s only a 200 loss. If you do like it, upgrade to a high end bow but this bow will kill anything in North America with good shot placement. Steps in order after purchase-
Bring it to your local bow shop and tell them you’re brand new to this. They’re used to this and being honest will let them know where to start. They’ll help fit your bow from scratch. What they’ll do-
Get your true draw length by measuring with your arms spread out like a T from finger tip to finger tip in inches then divide by 2.5. This will give your draw. They’ll set this on your bow. My guess is roughly 29 inches based on your height.
Next they’ll set draw weight. Start with 60 pounds. This will get good arrow speeds but also very easy to draw and do target practice while you’re getting started.
Next they’ll do timing which aligns the cams(the wheels the string is on) so they rotate in sync. Important for arrow flight.
Next they’ll set center shot. This moves the rest in alignment with the string so the arrow shoots straight out of the bow.
Next they’ll align the peep sight with your eye. This is important, at full draw the peep needs to go to where it’s most comfortable for your natural eye relief.
After this, shoot your arrows at 20 yards in the bow shop to align your first pin.
Again, this is the bow shops job and they will do all of this for you and with you. Be honest and tell them you know nothing and you want to learn. Humility will go a long ways and we all started from zero.
Last thing- NEVER DRAW YOUR BOW WITHOUT AN ARROW IN IT AND DO NOT DRY FIRE YOUR BOW. It will explode and the strings will de rail and this can rip your face and arms apart. Bows are not designed to shoot without transferring the energy into an arrow. Without the transfer, it needs to release it through the bow itself which makes it explode.

amazing, I’m going to grab one today. this is incredibly xxhelpful thank you so much.
what a legend, nostr is beautiful
No problem, send pics once you get started and feel free to ask questions during your set up. The more you shoot, the more advanced you’ll get and we can move along. The basics are above though to get started and shoot a target.
