I once heard an astrophysicist explain why we haven't seen aliens.

He suggested three possible reasons:

First, aliens may not exist;

Second, intergalactic travel could be too difficult, and no civilization has evolved enough for it;

Third, the most frightening possibility is that they are all hiding from each other or from someone even more dangerous, and any exposed alien civilization gets destroyed.
