šŸ’€šŸ§  Looking for inspiration for new ways to present my (mostly) design work

The goal is to showcase the key attributes of my work on the project, which is usually not just design, but might include also naming, copywriting, campaign strategy, etc.

What options for a portfolio are there:

1ļøāƒ£ Solo website

A personal website that includes a portfolio, usually in the form of case studies, is a classic.

For me, the downside is the need to set up each new project’s landing page, since I like to present each project in a different way to match the mood and support the storytelling.

2ļøāƒ£ Dribbble/Behance

Platforms for designers to showcase their work. Easy to use. Suitable for those who don’t want or need to run a standalone website.

Despite Dribbble being the standard, using it as the main showcase solution kind of positions you right there - in the standard zone.

3ļøāƒ£ Printed presentation

Impressive, if crafted with care. Also the physical medium feels more serious - the effect of proof of work.

But comes with issues, distribution being the biggest, if you need to deliver portfolio on demand worldwide.

4ļøāƒ£ Video reviews

A video documentary about work on a specific project - including the designer’s commentary, thoughts, and insights - seems like a pretty effective and valuable way to showcase the full scale of contribution.

I haven’t actually seen this portfolio format yet. It would be quite difficult to produce, though.

So far, I’m using a combination of a simple website and a Dribbble portfolio, which works just fine. But I’d like to explore more options.

So, what else is out there? Have you experimented with any other solutions.. ?

Your insights will be appreciated:

I love 3ļøāƒ£ but or as mentioned before can’t be a standalone.

The question is also who you are showing this work to.

4ļøāƒ£ is great for other designers and have digital content but is not fruibile by HR or most of the clients.

2ļøāƒ£

I think Dribbble and Behance are strongly pivoting to a gig-fiver-monetisation system more than a portfolio solution, just good to consider

1ļøāƒ£ on the website you are in full control, can’t really be censored and you can just reupload the code easily while on Dribbble or Behance you don’t know if tomorrow your content will be there.

Being in control is good because you can shape the container based on the content, it you have to talk a lot about a project you can if not no.

Or you can use different platforms to display different categories of work if you have different targets.

ā€œThe medium is the messageā€

Great, thank you!

Imagine 4ļøāƒ£ - the video - as you have the netflix documentary team shooting the doc about your work.

They wouldā€˜t focus only on design, but they would also explain the big picture and most importantly - how your work elevates the project. And they would use such language and storytelling that regular people will understand.

Similar as you watch a documentary about artist you never really liked, but they show you some background, explain his unique approach and how it influences his work, interview some people around, and suddenly you understand and appreciate him.

ad 1ļøāƒ£ : Yes, you are in full control, but you’re still within a website medium, so if you need to communicate larger scale of work (like extended branding package - visual identity, positioning, defining target groups, content strategy, creative campaign....) and explain the positive impact on the project, such case study will be very long and considering the quality of attention today, the format of website portfolio - pictures and texts - is very tricky way to showcase that amount of work.

And also, we are creating web content primarily for smartphones where texts feel 10x longer than on desktop, and you must you visuals that work on a small screen....
