You have to arrange things in a certain way so that they don't block the water streams and on top of that if you get the wrong kind of soap it can leave a bunch of gross scum on the dishes. Americans probably "just know" how it works subconsciously but if somebody used one that had never seen it before I am completely sure they would fuck it up.
