Why? I'm still pretty ignorant as to how all this works, but I've used DMs to reach out/be reached successfully a couple of times. What's the hang up?

There’s a lot around here that is still pretty bad. Including the community’s responses to questions.

I’d like to know what their specific complaints are too.

#asknostr

How many responses do you expect from your use of the hashtag here?

I have no expectations. But I bet money if you made a new post using that hashtag you would get some responses.

This was meant as a gentle push for you to try.

“The community” are people with families and jobs and lives that don’t revolve entirely around nostr, so sit the fuck down and wait for a response when you ask something of a complete stranger.

They’re unreliable. Different implementations mean not all clients support all types of DMs. You don’t know what you haven’t received, because your client may not support that type of DM. Older implementations can leak certain info and metadata. For instance, you can login with anyone’s npub and potentially see who they’ve sent DMs with and when, even if you can’t read the message contents. And your nsec is ever compromised, those DMs are forever public.

Uuuuugh. Ty bro.

🫡 I’m not saying they don’t have utility. I’ve used them. But they suck for a number of reasons and I wish they didn’t exist at all. lol
