I used to skip through non-fiction books looking for the most information-dense chapters and paragraphs, thinking I’m being more efficient. Now I know to only read an author if I admire them and/or their work.

That way, reading every line in the book, forward, appendices, fluff and all, becomes spending time with someone I admire in some way. Then I want the small talk, the deep talk, the thought provocation, the anecdotes, the tangents, the personal touch, the slightly irrelevant and the seemingly absurd. It’s like grabbing a coffee with them, not once, not twice, but daily if I wanted to.

I don’t want the slides, I want the time. You pick what to apply to your life and how but regardless, once the book is read, now you think a little bit more like the author. That stays with you. It’s less about lessons to apply and more about letting your mind be slowly shaped and pulled in a direction of your choosing.
