Thinking of getting some Florida Cracker sheep. Never had sheep before. Any entry level advice? What type of fencing do you use and do they have to have a lane back to their shelter (or do you lead them back and forth every day)? How many heads per acre do you graze?

I'm not familiar with Florida cracker sheep. We use electric net fencing and a battery powered energizer. We have a basic shade shelter that we move with from paddock to paddock. They are out on pasture all year. We currently have 40 (20ewes/20lambs) on 10acres and last year we had ~65 but had to take them off our pasture for a couple weeks late summer because the pasture wasn't recovering fast enough.

My advice would be to start with couple feeder rams to try things out. Find some people who have sheep in your area to see how they manage them too. Even if you don't like everything about what they do you'll get a sense of what's important for your location/breed. Sometimes it's climate related, sometimes parasites are an issue, pasture management, sourcing hay ect.
