in Soviet union we had to learn most of that history in school as kids - you Americans obviously didn't

the most famous literary work in Ukraine ( Тарас Бульба ) is about war with Poland in which ultimately a father kills his own son for defecting to Polish side because he was seduced by a Polish woman ...

or rather there is a famous line from that work that loosely translates as " i am the one who gave you life and i am the one who will take it " ... very Star Wars Esque ... except way older of course.

nobody tries to argue that historical context is irrelevant for Arab-Israeli conflict - do they ?

it's just that most people at least think they know what that context is when it comes to Israel, whereas Putin correctly judged that vast majority of Americans have no idea about history of Ukraine ...
