Right now I would say Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Monero, & Zcash are the top contenders for a full cryptocurrency ecosystem.
I would say
Bitcoin is at 80%
Zcash is at 60%
Bitcoin Cash is at 40%
Monero is at 20%
My pros, and cons
Bitcoin has a strong network effect, and probably the most ecosystem development, and infrastructure but issues like long confirmation times, inefficient payments rails, high fees, and really it’s too valuable to spend.
Zcash is a good strong private contender, has amazing if not the best cryptographic protocol, and utilizes tools like Flexa effectively, however it’s semi-centralization, and flexibility to regulation makes it harder to innovate in unfriendly environments, also the common critique, yes the dev fee.
Bitcoin cash appears to have commonplace usage in third world countries like Africa, & Some parts of Latin America, however while it’s an improvement over Bitcoin, it still has the fixed supply, & privacy issues.
Monero has a strong network effect, amazing privacy by default, and outstanding developers in the community who quickly tackle issues, it has decent confirmation times, and while previously syncing used to plague Monero, sync times have improved, however it lacks good payment gateway tools, and it’s association with criminal behavior make it harder to gain traction for normal people, many in the community let perfect ruin good, & its legal uncertainty also doesn’t help its adoption.
