Strong social ties and a sense of belonging are far more important to mental and spiritual well being than material standards of living.
Why would the USA have one of the most voracious appetites for drugs while simultaneously being the most wealthy countries in the world with one of the highest standards of living?
(prior to third world invasion of the last 50 years).
