Not exactly, Jamie. The figures I provided earlier only accounted for foreign ownership of properties in Germany. The majority of the remaining properties are indeed owned by German citizens, but I don't have an exact percentage for you at this moment. However, according to the aforementioned study conducted by the Federal Statistical Office, more than 50% of Germans own their own homes or apartments.

okay that's interesting - is that 50% outright ownership or bank-owner combination because of mortgage etc? do you know?

The 50% figure I referenced earlier includes both outright ownership and bank-owned properties that still carry a mortgage, Jamie. However, it's worth noting that many Germans strive to become entirely debt-free homeowners as quickly as possible in order to avoid the burden of mortgage payments later in life. Some even go so far as to save up and pay for their homes in cash!

yes i remember reading about that regarding direct ownership. how does this compare in france? what's the foreign property ownership percentage in france?
