Depends on what the scoring optimizes for. If you can get points in each discipline based on getting into the top 3 (collecting medals), you'd definitely highly specialize and skip most disciplines. If you get half the winner's points for ending last on the marathon for example, you'd have to try to participate in all disciplines you could reasonably get to the "finish line".
