I mostly buy french brands. Try it if you can they are very good, there is millésime sardines la belle-iloise who are popular too.

Old cans in olive oil taste better because the fish is candied very tender, some people stack cans and keep it to eat 10 years old cans, they even sell it in some french restaurants.

Here the ones on the picture cost 2.50€ each. They have bulk sale sometimes for ~2€ a can.

The more fancy like label rouge or millésime can cost between 5-10€

There are a few gourmet type shops here that I’ll have a look at. They probably will be more expensive than the mass produced tins that are available in the supermarkets here but those that I bought were also more expensive coming from a smaller producer.
