No I've had the node running a few years but only recently started figuring out what I can do with it...
How do I sync it?
It should do it automatically
Go to the Bitcoin app open it. Too left it should say running and show 100% synchronized. If not try shutting down umbrel and restarting

No ...I want to do it ...it's umbrel and it has lightning on it but it's not functioning with chanel's or being connected to a wallet ...can you help?
I just spend few days trying to figure out how to connect a self custody lightning wallet to nostr, but it looks like it's not been invented yet

There are two apps on umbrel. Thunderhub and ride the lightning
These two apps are tools you can use to set up lightning Chanel’s with other nodes.
There is a group on telegram. #Nodestrich. Here you can connect with many plebs that have lightning nodes and get help

Wishing thunderhub you can also connect your node to Amboss and also join the nodestritch group there
I suggest doing the above as a first step then also look at nostr:npub1rxysxnjkhrmqd3ey73dp9n5y5yvyzcs64acc9g0k2epcpwwyya4spvhnp8 on YouTube he has some great tutorials
Once you have done all this you will be in a good place to start opening channels with other plebs
