It's worse than caged hens. Imagine all the hens step on their shit and step on their food and then eat the food that contaminated with their own shit. Not to mention tons of drugs the farmers have to spray or inject in to these poor "cage free" souls.

May be cage will be better than cage free because they have their own cage. They can't walk around to step on another shit.
