Two former police officers, Ronnie Lessa and Élcio de Queiroz, have been jailed in Brazil for the murder of Marielle Franco, a prominent left-wing politician. The 2018 drive-by shooting also killed Franco's driver, Anderson Gomes. The verdict was announced after both defendants signed plea bargains. Investigations continue into suspected masterminds, including state police chief Rivaldo Barbosa and politicians Chiquinho Brazão and his brother Domingos.
