This saint in particular was part of the council of Florence in the 1400's, post Schism with Rome, and pre reformation. He stood against the embellishments of the Catholic Church. His context would be referring to the Orthodox Church as the only true church. The west left communion with the original church thus proving "they went out among us but were not of us".
