hikikomori - a socially avoidant behaviour (for more than 6 months) such as refusal to go outside of the home, to work, or to attend school, as well as withdrawing from social communication. Formally recognized and defined in Japan in the 1990s. It has been documented in many other countries with broad cultural differences.
